Premier League Darts Betting Tips – Back MVG in Battle of World Champions

The Premier League Darts roadshow heads across the water to beautiful Belfast this week, and among the highlights of the fixture list are two clashes between three former and one current world champion. Mouth watering stuff.

Here are a few Premier League Darts betting tips to whet the appetite for Round 11:

Robert Thornton vs Peter Wright

You wouldn’t think it looking at the league table, but Robert Thornton is paying some good stuff at the moment. This is a guy that has drawn 6-6 and lost 5-7 to Michael van Gerwen in the last few weeks alone, averaging 104 in his last outing. Let’s resist the urge to write him off straight off the bat.

The Thorn has won both of his matches in Belfast to date, so Peter Wright really has his hands full here. But Snakebite is unbeaten in three outings, with a win over Dave Chisnall backed by creditable draws with Phil Taylor and Adrian Lewis, so we have no concerns about his form.

Since fully recovering from illness Thornton has taken at least four legs in 5/6 matches, and that is our angle in here. Let’s add the Over 10.5 Legs mark to our acca at 1/2.

Raymond van Barneveld vs Phil Taylor

Not many players can boast a head-to-head record of 5-5 with Phil Taylor in their last ten meetings, but we know that Raymond van Barneveld will always raise his game for the big occasion. Barney has won 6/8 since the Premier League added a Belfast leg to its itinerary, so can the big Dutchman spring a surprise on his old foe here?

Last week’s action in Sheffield is a good guide. Barney lost to James Wade 7-4 in the opening game of the night, before The Power defeated Wade in the final match-up of the evening by the same scoreline – despite RVB’s average being a full five points higher than Taylor’s in those encounters.

We really rate Barney’s chances here – he’s unbeaten in six against Taylor in the Premier League (four wins, two draws) so let’s take him in the Double Chance market (win or draw) at 6/4. If you’re feeling slightly less confident, the Over 11.5 Leg mark is available at 5/4.

James Wade v Adrian Lewis

Adrian Lewis is slowly but surely going about his business in this Premier League campaign, and he’s into the top four after a trio of games unbeaten. He’s far from his absolute best, but he’s getting the job done.

Mind you, we could say the same about Wade, who is only outside of the play-off places by virtue of legs difference. He was unbeaten in five until Taylor derailed his march in Belfast.

So there is very little to choose between them stats wise, but the head-to-head stakes are interesting. Lewis is unbeaten in five against Wade (four wins, one draw), but at 21/20 he looks too short against a man who is in such fine form. Instead, let’s add the Over 10.5 Legs mark to our acca at 4/9 – that’s been successful in 8/9 between these two.

Michael van Gerwen vs Gary Anderson

Good luck separating these two. Prior to Sheffield last week you have to go back to Round 3 (played on February 18) to see one of these two men lose in the Premier League.

But defeat to Phil Taylor last week has put a dent in Anderson’s confidence for sure, while Van Gerwen marches on relentlessly as ever. He hasn’t lost since the first round of fixtures, and last week blitzed a 117 average as if it was the easiest thing in the world.

These two met in Round 2 and MVG took the spoils 7-3 that day, but we fancy this to be a tighter affair given that the Dutchman has drawn three of his last four. Even so, the chance to back Van Gerwen at 4/6 to win a single match doesn’t come along often, so let’s take the opportunity.

Raymond van Barneveld vs Robert Thornton

It’s always a nightmare betting on the second match of the night, and you could imagine this one being a tight, low quality affair in an ‘after the Lord Mayor’s show’ style.

If that’s the case then we would probably favour Thornton – Barney will put his heart and soul into his battle with Taylor earlier in the night – so the 2/1 on Thornton looks worthy of longshot investment.

  • MVG to Win, Over 10.5 Legs (Lewis vs Wade & Thornton vs Wright) at 2.60/1
  • Van Barneveld Double Chance against Taylor at 6/4
  • Thornton to beat Van Barneveld at 2/1
